About MRU Marketing and Communications
Mount Royal has enjoyed a rich history of transformational student experiences, exceptional teaching, and meaningful community partnerships through its more than 100 year history. MRU’s Marketing and Communications team tells that story to the world through a variety of channels ranging from our website and the award-winning Summit Magazine to social media, earned media, internal communications and events, working closely with colleagues in the Community Engagement Division and across the University to amplify the MRU brand and Mount Royal’s Strategic Plan.
About the Role
Reporting to the Director, Communications, your role as a story-teller is key to promoting and enhancing Mount Royal University’s brand and reputation. To be successful, you will have a strong background in writing, content creation, photography, video, and digital writing with an ability to see story, video and social media potential that others might overlook. You are able to build compelling and colourful narratives around MRU’s strategic vision and brand, and someone who thrives in a collaborative team environment.
Working closely with the Director of Communications and Editor, Print and Online Publications and the Communications team, this position will develop and execute proactive story strategies. The incumbent will work closely with MRU’s academic and administrative departments and resources to enhance our approach to amplifying MRU’s growing research efforts, new programs and initiatives, institutional accomplishments, and much more.
The position will: Write compelling stories for the MRU website and award-winning Summit Magazine; Develop and execute long and short-form brand journalism amplifying MRU brand and voice working with all areas of the Community Engagement division; contribute to regular editorial meetings and contribute to broader marketing and communications plans; provide assistance and backup to the Editor, Print and Online Publications including assigning stories, editing stories, working with freelance writers photographers and MRU’s Video Content Creator and posting content to the MRU website. The position will also take photos and shoot video to accompany online stories and/or share on social media.
This position is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week.
Responsibilities

Supporting and amplifying the MRU strategic plan, MRU research and scholarship strategic plan, the MRU Continuing Education strategic plan and more by writing compelling MRU.ca web, Summit Magazine and brand journalism stories.

Taking photos and accompanying videos that create compelling narratives that enhance the reputation of Mount Royal University and amplify University’s brand voice and strategic plan.

Assigning and editing stories as directed by publications editor, including working with production team on Summit Magazine, with marketing strategists on brand journalism, liaising with freelance writers and editing stories to conform to MRU style guidelines, working with studio team on production of Summit Magazine and web communications officer on website content.

Contributing to broader UA division writing projects and objectives (both internal and external) that promote and enhance efforts in marketing and communications, development, alumni and government relations

Writing materials to meet the goals of projects, using different writing styles appropriate to the channel - editing copy based on different styles and communications channels

Participating in crisis communications as a member of the emergency response communications team, with primary responsibility for creating key messages for communications to internal and external stakeholders (students and employees, media, government).
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field

5- 7 years of increasingly responsible communications experience

Media or publications experience is an asset

A highly organized self-starter, skilled storyteller and creative problem solver who exercises sound judgment and attention to detail.

Thorough understanding of CP style is an asset

Experience with video and editing software and content management systems an asset
Salary: $75,147.80 - 95,113.20 per annum
